Leaders of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama (representing E.K. faction of Sunnis) had recently aired their concerns over what they termed the IUML's efforts to endear itself with the Sunni faction led by Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musaliyar.
Mr. Basheer, who maintained that the party had not changed its attitude or approach towards any Muslim group, including the A.P. Sunni faction, said the IUML had always taken seriously the opinions and suggestions of the Samastha leaders.
The secretariat meeting, which passed a few resolutions, including the one seeking urgent measures to make available compensation for the kin of the victims of the Mangalore plane crash, expressed satisfaction over the recent Supreme Court verdict regarding the ban on the production of the pesticide endosulfan.
The IUML secretariat criticised the attempts of the Opposition parties to “constantly and pointlessly” raise allegations against the ruling parties and their leaders.
The meeting observed that Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan demanding Forest and Sports Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar's resignation in the wake of allegations against his father R. Balakrishna Pillai only exposed the “dual stance” of the former Chief Minister.
“He brazenly demanded the resignation of Mr. Ganesh Kumar while keeping mum on the court's upholding of the Vigilance inquiry against his son V.S. Arun Kumar,” Mr. Basheer said, adding that it clearly exposed the double face of Mr. Achuthanandan.
General secretary of the IUML K.P.A. Majeed said the secretariat meeting, presided over by party State president Panakkad Sayed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, decided to start a membership campaign of the party from December 1.
Party leaders E.Ahamed, P.K. Kunhalikutty, M.K. Munner, P.K. Abdu Rabb, and M.P. Abdussamad Samadani, among others, attended the meeting
